Why disparity remains?

Sheethal Mariya

I credit my upbringing to the distinctive coastal culture prevalent in Kerala. The coastal regions and their inhabitants are markedly different from other areas, yet our shared cultural heritage that dates back to ancient times creates a sense of solidarity.

One of the most captivating aspects of our culture is the unique dress, jewellery, and colour preferences that we embrace. Colour, in particular, plays an integral role in our decision-making process. We tend to favour darker and brighter hues in the colour palette, setting us apart from other regions. Our choices are driven by attraction, rather than what may suit our skin tone, possibly due to a lack of awareness about modern fashion trends or poor economic conditions.

We belong to a traditional fisherfolk community, where fishing skills have been passed down from generation to generation. Given the limited opportunities in education, many of us have chosen fishing as our profession, and this has become our primary source of income. However, it could be argued that our occupation is a result of a lack of socioeconomic mobility.

The disordered nature of our homes is also a visible manifestation of this circumstance. Despite these challenges, we take pride in our heritage and maintain a deep sense of community spirit.
