MACHAN AS “VANNATHIPPULLU”

Manu K M

The Oriental Magpie Robin, locally known as Vannathipull is a common bird found in villages and towns around Kerala.

They received the name vannathipull as their black and white exterior looks similar to the body of a dark skinned Vannan women , who does laundry under the sun, the chest is white like the clothes they washed. There is no written history about the vannan community in Kochi and  I am trying to record their lost history and marginalised lives through the choice of community project. There are arguments that the "Dobi Khanas" belong to the Tamil "Vannan" class who have been doing laundry work in Kochi since 1720. Some sources suggest that the king of Kochi called them from Tamil Nadu and others suggest that the Dutch government brought them to wash the clothes of the ship workers.  It is said that there were about 70 pools and washing stones in the "Veli" area of Kochi for the Vannans.

Years ago, the GCDA (Greater Cochin Development Authority) filled up the ponds and narrowed them down to the wall at Dobhi Khana.

It was daybreak I saw machan (friend) for the first time. Even though I used to see him, walking, shaking his tail in the backyard, we never used to talk. He got disturbed when I mentioned him “Vannathipullu” while we had the conversation..

Machan : You should not mention me “Vannathipullu”.

Why..? I asked.

Machan: Its not my name.

Then.?

Machan:....

Then what’s your actual name??

Machan: Nomenclature is kind of your business, whatever it is, you need not address me in that name again.

Then what should I call... "Kili"? (bird)

Machan : Are you mocking me... you guys use "kili" to mention people doing blunder.

Huuh..

Machan : What do you call your friends?

Its like...Machane... Buddy..Broo..

Then there are swear words... I dont think that’s necessary.

Machan: Ya, you can go on with machan. That’s fine.

Ok Macha. My name is Manu.

Machan : Yah, I know.

Really...How ?

Machan: My dad has told me about you.

Your dad..!?

Machan : Yaah... Don’t you remember the bird that you caught in a plastic cover from the meter box in Nadir's home? That was my dad...

But...I was to young..

I took him to care and nourish him...

Grandma didnt allow me to...

Machan : Who gave you the authority to do that ?    Who told you that we are of a bad species, not a good fancy bird, I know its your grandma who threw away my dad..

How did we became a bad  bird?? "Vannathipullu" it is... Under what circumstances, you humans named us??

But.. I told you... I was in 7th grade or something..

 I wasnt serious about it...

Machan : Hmm.. It hurted my dad a lot, he mentioned about it even before his death.

Sorry...

Without any reply he flew away.

It was midnight, still I didnt slept after he disappeared.

The moments that I took his father in a plastic cover from the nest with those eggs, came to mind..

Why did grandma mentioned him as street bird ?  Is "Vannathipull" a bad name? Who is naming all these?

I googled it

Oriental Magpie Robin.. is its name, how is it, that too is named by humans..!

“Behind the name

According to Professor Induchudhan [6] the fact behind the name Vannathippul could be two ways.

Because the outer part of the Vannathi pull is black like that of the Vannathi ( Laundress ) who works in the sun and the chest and other parts are white like the clothes whitened by the mannathi.

Because the bird moves its tail up and down from time to time like an vannathi hits a stone to wash clothes.”

Ookay..so basically it’s racism and body shaming,  this is so bad...

I explained about everything to him, the very next day..

Actually...Is there any connection between your species and “vannar”?

Machan :Who knows? I’ve been searching for it for years, no one in my family knows about it.

I think it is about criticising or mocking some community, and they used you for it

Machan :Humans criticising each other, fighting, groupism, community,.. and so on. And disturbing other animals; what’s wrong with you guys?

I will explain it after reading ‘sapiens’.

Machan : What’s that?

Sad. Don’t you know about “Yuval Noah Harari”?

Machan : You don’t even know about the neighbouring beings like us, don’t you feel ashamed to ask about some foreign hariharan?

Don’t underestimate me, I will find your connection with ‘vannar’ community, just gimme some time.

Machan : Ook, go find...

Where to search about it..?

Machan : It is ‘vannar’ near the Veli school, the ‘Dhobi Khana’ . Some -*----** (chirping) told me that people there do laundry.

Who is it.?

Machan : It is my friend in Amaravathi.. You guys call him “Uppan”

Oh I see.... “Uppante appan kallukudiyan”(Uppan is common bird in Kerala, their eyes are always reddish and  people spoke like “his father is an alcoholic” )

I heard a talk about it, is it right...?

Machan : Pitty, who the hell is creating these crap

Whatever it is,.. I know about “Dhobi Khana”.  I studied in “Veli” School nearby it. Also i read about them in a book...
