Gundiyali is a potter’s village in the Kutch region of India. An entire community is involved in ‘maati kaam’ (clay pottery) with families specializing in products such as pots, lamps, etc. Hand-painted motifs of red, black and white pigments are a unique feature of Gundiyali pottery.
Community life revolves around pottery with men handling business and wheel-throwing. The women juggle all household responsibilities and parenting along with kneading clay, transporting products, preparing the furnace for firing and painting motifs. The card shown here is from a game about the women of Gundiyali and their role within this community.
