Karla Caves are first-century BCE rock-cut Buddhist caves/ Chaityagriha located in Maharashtra, India. This Chaityagriha or the sanctuary, also the largest in the country was created for spiritual practice and communal gatherings.

The pillars of the Chaityagriha(temple) are symbolic of people belonging to a community (Buddhism) who wants to attain purity (Stupa). These caves are a testament to the significance of community in ancient times as people from every stratum of society, including a prince, merchants, as well as monks, and devotees contributed in the establishment of the caves.
